When redecorating or remodeling your house, one of the features that might need a bit of extra consideration is the indoor lighting. A normal glass globe over a regular 120 watt bulb is common in households; however, for the adventurous type there are several other choices besides the most common.
Consider the function of your indoor lighting, is the sole purpose to light the room or help set a mood, the mood can vary between cozy, romantic, professional, or pristine depending on the person. Your personality and lifestyle should always be a part of your decision in the ton of your room lighting.
Ambient, Accent, Decorative, and Task lighting are the four main types of indoor lighting, each adding a unique light to any room. Ambient lighting is the type of lighting that gives just enough not to blind you but to light the entire room. Accent lighting creates a mood in the room, but it normally focuses on a certain part of the wall where artwork or other decorative pictures are hung. Decorative lighting adds décor and illuminates the room. Task lighting is exactly that, helps with concentrated light for those simple everyday tasks of reading, writing, and sewing.
If there are a lot of imperfections in the room that you wish to hide, you can do so with contemporary lighting, gives just enough light for safety but covers those little cracks or chips from sight. You can also use indoor lighting to set the mood of a room. If a lot of guests are present in one room of your home, you might try to add a special touch with classic contemporary lighting fixtures or maybe the dinning room needs a chandelier or two to brighten the mood at the dinner table. Lighting can set a romantic mood for the bedroom if done right, a dimmer switch is ideal with energy saving light bulbs.
If you have an activity room that is frequented due to a gaming system or a special television for the significant other, you might want to add just enough lighting to tone the room. These rooms are perfect for task lamps because they are designating one area for a certain project, such as gaming, playing on the computer, or beside a recliner that is normally a key reading spot. The ceiling fixture is where the actual light to brighten the room will be, but with enough floor lamps and the task lamp or two, that light will not be used that often.
Most people will classify the bathroom as the room that needs the most light. This is not necessarily true, as long as the light offered illuminates the bathroom enough to get the jobs done, the amount of lighting is not a problem. If redecorating your bathroom, you could choose to run illuminating light bulbs along the sides of the mirror and for the men that love shaving in the shower, a nice shower mirror/radio combo with a light attached.
Contemporary lighting was used at one point in time as an outside light to keep the wildlife away, now it is used in homes across the world as decorative lighting. Indoor lighting can be tricky to perfect if you are using several different types of lighting fixtures; however, the out come can be on a more personal level than hiring a home decorator.
