Rustic Lighting

19 Oct

Think great outdoors or western- vacation lodge, ranch, country cabin, downtown old-town square. Sometimes our own back yard is a rustic oasis in need of proper illumination. Inside or outside lighting options are varied and options for rustic lighting in particular are many.

Rural countryside in style, rustic lighting is another traditional form, and can take on a rather modern look when desired. One of the most beautiful effects on earth is the lighting of a long country driveway or path. This look is often associated with fall décor, as the days shorten and more lighting is required for outside activity.

The rustic lighting style incorporates such themes and materials as wildlife and antlers, natural tone and skin tone light coverings or lampshades, metal and/or wood lanterns with glass covers and often with specific design elements such as piney woods carvings of pinecones, trees etc.

The rustic look is often heavy, with thick furniture and hard floors. These naturally tough and durable qualities are softened with plush cushion and rustic lighting design elements. In larger areas such as common rooms or rustic living rooms and porches, chandeliers are used as the major focal light attraction while providing glare-free light to a specific area. Rustic chandeliers are also often heavy in appearance, fashioned of genuine or faux antler. Iron and other metals are also popular choices for rustic chandeliers or lamps and sconces. Rustic hanging lantern lights are popular for porch areas or outdoor sitting areas.
Remember to consider safety when decorating, especially in your neighborhoods at nighttime. The beautiful thing is that when you are choosing outdoor safety illumination, all design elements can easily be incorporated in these fixtures also.
